Biochemistry, Structural Biology, and Biophysics of Protein Synthesis

Jamie H.D. Cate In addition to protein synthesis, I keep a close eye on advances in alternative energy. We own one car (a Prius), have installed solar panels, and started a reasonable-sized vegetable garden (It's great to live in Berkeley!). Here are some Web sites that have caught my attention, and some notes on energy-saving steps we have taken with our home. |

Jack Dunkle During translation, after each peptide bond has formed, a tRNA which has just accepted the nascent peptide, must be moved from the A-site of the ribosome to the P-site. The P-site tRNA must be simultaneously moved to the E-site. This concerted motion requires broad structural reorganization of the ribosome. I am interested in identifying the molecular details of this reorganization. |

Aleksandar Todorovic It was quite challenge to study proteins and peptides with combinatorial and medicinal chemistry approaches during my PHD program. Now, my research is based on biochemical and structural approach that targets the regulation of protein synthesis in eukaryotes. I am trying to elucidate the detailed molecular mechanism on polycistronic mRNAs translation initiation. |

Veronica Zepeda I am working on alternative energy projects. I am involved in a protein design project to study enzymes potentially useful in ethanol production. I am also working to structurally and enzymatically characterize the cellulosomes of C. papyrosolvens. These projects are aimed at improving the conversion of cellulose into biofuels. |

Wen Zhang I am from Kunming, the city of spring in China. I work on bioinformatics and structure biology to explore the secrets of ribosome translation. My interests are using multidisciplinary knowledge from physics, math, computer science, structure biology, etc., to pursue the real stories of the evolution and the development of life, as well as the essential of human consciousness. |
